After Hours

I actually don't stay out after 2am as much as I once did but occasionally I get on a roll in the evening and venture out to the darker corners of the city. After hours bars in Bangkok tend to be a bit seedy and off the beaten path. Technically after hours clubs are illegal so you can imagine how quickly these places close up shop and move on. Here are just a few of the staples:

The Standard.
For now the hottest after hours place is Tunnel Bar on Langsuan Soi 5. This makes for about a 25 minute taxi ride from the ET Zone but is well worth the visit. Cover varies but most recently it seems to have settled on 500 baht per person including 2 drinks. Unlike most underground clubs in Bangkok, Tunnel Bar is actually very large and open during regular hours as well. The crowd is a typical mix of drunk farang guys and "working" Thai girls with some actual normal people thrown in.

The Alternative.
Another option is Boss club in Pratunam near Baiyoke Tower. This place seems to draw more men then ladies but then again both venues seem to get flooded with farang after 3 anyway. This 2 story venue is smaller than Tunnel but well maintained. Missing are the low ceilings and carpeted floors of the previous Boss location.

The Convenient.

Absolute on Sukhumvit Soi 7/1 may no longer be the after hour place of choice for Sukhumvit lovers. Instead Scratch Dog in the basement of the Windsor Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 20 is taking up the slack in all it's after hour glory complete with clouds of smoke, drunk patrons, and poor cocktails. The first thing you will notice is the standard odor of smoke, sex, urine and mildew that seems to follow the after hour crowd like a fat kid following an ice cream trunk.

The Others.
Aside from those listed above you will have plenty of taxi drivers offering free rides to a growing number of bars that will stay open until stupid o'clock.

  • Park Bridge in Patpong off Silom is a small 2 storey venue with an interesting location.
  • Spice in the basement of Ambassador Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 11 is operated by the police so should have a long run of 6am escapades
  • Spicy behind MBK in Rongmuang Soi 1 is owned by the same group as Boss and is probably the largest of the bunch.

Yeah it's a bit smokey but worth it. Don't go unless you're wasted though...

Regarding Suk Soi 7-1, as of mid-2008, the pub reference there re Sin Bar I'm assuming should be the Absolute 7 pub... it's the first shop on the right hand side as you enter the soi. The description in your post matches exactly... Except... they were staying open until 3 am, but lately have shortened to 1 am closing... Not sure if it's temporary or "permanent"... It's a great, fun place to hang for simple pleasures and good music... Plus some other fun to be had elsewhere on this soi, just steps from the exit from Nana BTS.
