Shades of Retro

This isolated bar located on Thonglor Thararom Soi 2 around the corner from Playground is like a smaller version of Tuba. Everything in the bar is for sale and has likely been around longer than the patrons. Predominantly a place to sit back and relax with a beer this bar offers a good selection of cocktails. Both Shades of Retro and Tuba offer a more hi-so feel to an otherwise Thai bar but neither caters to the cocktail crowd the same way Koze or To Die For do. For antiquers this place might have some hidden gems but for the rest of us this is simply a playful collage of old yard sale furnishings.

  • Tunage: typical background tunes good for chillin'
  • Dance Floor: no
  • Cocktails: good selection but watch the cheap ingredients...best to ask for a drink by name (i.e. Smirnoff Martini)
  • Drinks: beer and bottles are available but the atmosphere is best for cold brew or cocktails
  • Price: cheap
  • Location: Thonglor Thararom Soi 2
  • Seating: interesting collection of seats ranging from hard plastic to soft foam could support 80
  • Ambiance: comfortable...a bit like my grandmother's attic minus the dust, wigs and mothballs
  • Pickup: this is a BYOB (Bring Your Own Booty) joint
  • Overall: quaint and relaxing make it a good spot to unwind during the week

Mike Sightings: I walk by this place all the time but have only felt compelled to visit 2-3 times. The place is nice but for the same atmosphere a bit closer to home I'll head to Tuba. That's not to say this isn't a good option for those living closer to Shades of Retro making this worthy of an extra head.

Now, ive been here many months ago and I had a great time. The staff are chilled and pleasant, the drinks are well served.

The best thing for me was the music, the owner had his iPOD hooked up and I have to say he has good taste.

Its a place for pre drinks, meeting friends or just having a chilled drink with ya homies.
